I stumbled across an article over at Crunch Gear talking about the fact that all of these gimmicky “3D” movies aren’t going to lure more people out to the movies and that theaters are “doomed” because of HD.
I agree that the 3D gimmick won’t last, when I went to see a 3D movie the highlight of my experience was getting a slight headache from it. With that said I don’t think that Hollywood is doomed because people have HD in their living rooms now. People WILL continue to go to the movies, and the reason for this is simple.
I completely agree that you can have a better movie viewing experience at home on a 60” 1080p LCD TV with Blu-ray and a badass surround sound system. However what the author of the article has failed to realize is that people don’t go to the movies for the “superior picture” or the wonderful experience of buying $20 popcorn. They go simply because its “something to do” on a Friday night with friends.
3D Movies aren’t going to save Hollywood (any time soon at least), but the boredom of the average American will. People want to be entertained, not just in their homes – they want an experience.
