Several upcoming fall series are based on movies like ABC’s Eastwick (The Witches of Eastwick), NBC’s Parenthood and ABC Family’s 10 Things I Hate About You, making it a perfect time to look at some of the other TV shows born from movies and see how they fared with viewers.
There have been several series adapted from movies in the past few decades, most of which didn’t last. Guess its hard to duplicate that big screen magic on the small screen.
Remember My Big Fat Greek Wedding? It was a huge hit in theaters but the TV show only lasted 7 episodes. Clerks was a cult hit for Kevin Smith but when the director tried to bring an animated version to ABC, the show bombed before the network could even air the entire 6 episodes that were produced. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a teen classic but the TV show, starring a young Jennifer Aniston, only lasted 13 episodes.
It isn’t all doom and gloom for TV series based on films though. Some have become big hits, like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Friday Night Lights, MASH, and Mr. Belvedere.
Can you think of any other TV shows based on films? What are your favorites? How do you think this year’s crop of TV shows based on movies will do? Will you be watching?
