Last night, celebrities, including Ryan Seacrest, Justin Bieber, Alyssa Milano, Kathy Griffin, Nicole Richie, Sting, Gavin Rossdale, Chelsea Handler, Ne-Yo, Giuliana Rancic, Pete Wentz and Ke$ha, rallied behind Larry King’s telethon to raise money for the damage caused by the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast. Donations from around the country came into the stars who were answering the phone lines and sharing the sentiment of angry callers on the air.
The two-hour CNN fundraising show raised more than $1.81 million, with proceeds going to three charities- United Way, The National Wildlife Federation and The Nature Conservancy.
“Everyone’s really pissed off,” said actress Jenny McCarthy, who was reporting on online messages in the telethon’s “Tweet Suite.”
In a CNN interview during the special, shrimper Archie Dantin in Pointe a la Hache, Louisiana said, “The toughest thing I see is losing a way of life that we’ve had down here for generations and generations.”
A BP spokesman issued a statement, via CNN, Monday saying the oil company is “proceeding with urgency to make the situation right for the environment and for those who have affected by this tragic event.”
If you missed out on the telethon and still want to help, you can bid on a number of celebrity donated items, including a pair of Larry’s suspenders at Charitybuzz.com.
