Marathons or Music: Your choices for New Year’s Eve

the-three-stoogesStaying in this New Year’s Eve? Don’t feel like braving the throngs of champagne soaked partiers to ring in 2010?  There’s plenty of company on the couch with a variety of options to choose from as you and your family and/or friends hang out around the house on New Year’s Eve night.

There’s the tried n’ true traditional fare, namely Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve with Ryan Seacrest.  Sure, it doesn’t have much in the way of “rock”, or even Dick Clark, for that matter since the former American Bandstand host had a stroke several years ago.  However, Ryan Seacrest will be presiding over the affair as he has since 2006, when he was made executive producer of the annual televised fete. Nevertheless, Dick Clark (who recently turned 80) will be there, as will Fergie serving as hostess on the show’s pretaped segments.  Among the musical guests scheduled to perform are: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez,  Colbie Calait, The Black Eyed Peas, Robin Thicke, and Keri Hilson.  Additionally, Jennifer Lopez and Daughtry will be performing live in Times Square for the show. Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve with Ryan Seacrest airs at 10PM Eastern on December 31, 2010 and continues until 2AM.

Another New Year’s Eve tradition is SY-FY’s annual marathon of episodes of The Twilight Zone.  Showcasing a variety of classic episodes from the  horror/fantasy/sci-fi anthology series which ran from 1959 to 1964, viewers can get their Rod Serling fix from 8AM on December 31, 2009 and continuing all day through January 1, 2010.

For less traditional fare, there’s always New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly on NBC, beginning at 10PM on December 31st and running until 12:30AM on January 1st, 2010.  Joining Carson Daly are special correspondents Natalie Morales and Allison Stewart.  Although he doesn’t have the years under his belt that Dick Clark has with his own New Year’s Eve Special, Daly has managed to reel in some top-notch musical acts this year, including Green Day, Jay-Z, Rihanna, as well as the cast of the Broadway musical, Hair.

Similarly, FOX rings in the New Year with Billboard’s New Year’s Eve Live beginning at 11PM December 31st. Carmen Electra hosts the show from Las Vegas and is joined by guests Eva Longoria Parker and American Idol performers Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta.

Last, but “soitanly” not least, AMC will be running remastered episodes of The Three Stooges from 7AM on Thursday December 31, 2009 until 6AM on January 1, 2010.   That’s 23 hours of eye-gouges, nose pulls, and doing the Curley Shuffle.  (I really hope they do the “Swingin’ the Alphabet” episode!)

Those are just a few of your New Year’s Eve (and New Year’s Day) options.  Tune in for a solid block of one or make the most of your remote control and mix n’ match your viewing.  Happy New Year!
