The holidays are usually a great time to get together with family and friends but not the best time to watch new TV. Though most shows are reruns tonight, TNT is giving us a late Christmas gift tonight with a new episode of Men of a Certain Age.
The Ray Romano-Andre-Braugher-Scott Bakula dramedy that has been advertised non-stop on TNT for months is insightful, intertwining stories of three guys who are getting hit hard by middle-age. But, that doesn’t mean the men are looking for sympathy or looking to relive their youth, that would be too easy. Romano shows his serious side as Joe, a party-supply store owner who is separated from his wife, Bakula plays Terry, a role almost a little too close to his real life persona- an L.A. actor reduced to auditioning for Lifetime movies- who is single but still manages to charm the twentysomething set, and Braugher is perfect as Owen, a guy working for his dad at a car dealership.
In tonight’s episode, Joe’s ex-wife (Penelope Ann Miller) joins the Thoreaus for a school charity event – with a new boyfriend in tow. Also at the function is perennial bachelor Terry, who serves as an auctioneer and happens upon a past ladylove. But back to Joe’s woes: His less-than-glittery social agenda involves hanging out with his bookie, Manfo.
