MP4 (which is short for MPEG-4) is a popular video file format used by the PSP, iPod, and other devices. Some of these devices will only play MP4 video files for video playback, which means you will have to convert files that are a different format (.avi, .fla etc) to MPEG-4 before you can watch them.
There are quite a few good programs out there that allow you to easily convert video files to the MP4 format.
1.Videora iPod Converter
If you are looking to convert your video files to work on your iPod, the Videora iPod Converter is probably your best bet. This free video conversion program is easy to use and allows you to convert avi, divx, xvid and many more formats into an iPod friendly MPEG-4, H.264 format.
Videos converted with Videora will work with any iPod that supports video playback, which includes the iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod classic. Videora is freeware which means it can be downloaded and used for free.
2. PSP Video 9
PSP owners will have to convert most video files to work with the PSP. PSP Video 9 converts popular PC video formats such (avi, mpeg, etc) into the MPEG-4 format required by the PSP.
What I really like about PSP Video 9 is the fact that the program has built in file management, and allows you to move video files to and from your PSP. With other programs you would have to convert the video and then go open up windows explorer and drag the file over to your PSP, however this program can do that all for you. PSP Video 9 is also freeware and can be downloaded and used for free.
SUPER is a video playback and encoding program that is a bit more complex than Videora or PSP Video 9. That being said, this program can do just about anything you need when it comes to video encoding, and best of all, it does it for free. If you are looking to convert a video to something other than an iPod or PSP or have a more advanced understanding of video encoding, I recommend using this program.
SUPER comes with all of the codecs you need already built in so you don’t have to spend hours searching the web for the right codec. Super also includes a great video player that can play just about every format out there, even streaming internet video.
