NBC is currently considering airing the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards with a tape delay after airing the 2010 Golden Globes live in all U.S. time zones for the first time last month.
The network is currently discussing the plan with affiliates.
Tape-delaying some entertainment programs on the West Coast has been a longtime practice, however, as fans continue to get their news through other non-TV sources like Twitter and Facebook, NBC wants to capture their full attention without spoilers.
The Grammys on CBS, which played to big ratings, were tape-delayed, but the awards show features an emphasis on performances rather than the actual award. The three-and-a-half hour program drew the biggest average audience for that kudofest since 2004, jumping 32% over last year in adults 18-49 to a 9.8 rating and up 35% among total viewers, to an average 25.8 million. The premiere music awards show, however, is different from the Emmys and the film industry’s Oscars because it is packed with performances and features far fewer awards over a longer stretch of primetime.
