ESPN’s overnight ratings indicated the game was seen in 8.1 million households and by 12.3 million viewers. That’s the best since the 1990 game on ABC (8.7 million households, 13.2 million viewers on over-the-air television).
This game, the first one to come before the Super Bowl instead of after, out-drew last year’s NBC telecast by 40%. The game was also in a later time slot, when more people watch TV.
But it also had to compete against the Grammys on CBS, which attracted 25.8 million viewers, the most since 2004.
