According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maria Bello will star in a new HBO drama series entitled “Emergency Sex.” The series will be written by “Slumdog Millionaire” screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and executive produced by Bello, Beaufoy and Russell Crowe.
The project is an adaptation of the book “Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures: A True Story From Hell on Earth,” which is about three idealists searching for meaning in the world’s toughest war zones. The three are bonded for life by their experiences. The memoir, by Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait, and Andrew Thomson describes the UN Peacekeeping missions that challenged everything they believed.
The book was highly controversial when released and caused a shake up at the U.N. The stories in the series will interweave between wartorn hotspots, primal desires, atrocities, and exotic pleasures as they do in the book.
There is no word on when the series will debut on HBO. It will join a string of new HBO series, including the Martin Scorsese-produced “Boardwalk Empire” and “How To Make It In America” which debuts this week.
As for Crowe, he’ll be keeping busy this year. Not only is he producing “Sex”, but he’s also set to star in a remake of “A Star Is Born”, along with Beyonce.
