‘Scrubs’ Will Return With New Cast, New Plot and New Name

250“Scrubs,” will indeed return to ABC next winter but it won’t be the same at all. The show is getting a new plot, a new studio and even a new name.

The show’s executive producer Bill Lawrence let it spill last week that when the sitcom comes back, it’ll no longer take place in the hospital, but in a medical school with professors Cox (John C. McGinley) and Turk (Donald Faison) leading a group of new students.

Lawrence promised that the hospital we’ve all grown to love, Sacred Heart, won’t disappear completely though. Dr. Cox and Dr. Turk’s students will end up seeing several familiar faces while doing rotations there every now and then. Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Judy Reyes (Carla) and Ken Jenkins (Dr. Kelso) have signed on to appear as guest stars throughout the season. This comes as exciting news for fans who thought they’d seen the last of Braff’s J.D.

The med students will be comprised of all new actors for the series, though casting has yet to begin. Lawrence mentioned that ABC would like at least one of the new hires to be a big name, some are kicking around “Gilmore Girls”‘ Lauren Graham’s as being on top of the show’s wish list.

As for last season’s newbies, Eliza Coupe, Betsy Beutler, Sonal Shah and Todd Bosley, the interns who were once rumored to be “Scrubs” future, Coupe will most likely be the only one welcomed back. Neil Flynn (The Janitor) and Christa Miller (Jordan) have both landed series regular roles on new sitcoms so it is unlikely they will return, though Christa’s new gig is Lawrence’s other show, “Cougar Town.”

“Scrubs” was filmed in an abandoned hospital in the valley but the revamped version of the series is also getting a new set on a studio lot in Culver City.

When the show comes back it will mostly have a new name too that may include the word scrubs but will also distinguish it as its own entity.

No Sonal Shah? Too bad. She was more interesting than Eliza Coupe.

I believe it should’ve ended at season 8. I saw the first episode of season nine to give it a chance and its not the same and isn’t as interesting anymore or funny for that matter. It makes me sad. This WAS my favorite show.
