“Southland” fans can rest easy, TNT has confirmed they picked up the show for a third season.
The cable channel ordered 10 more episodes of the critically acclaimed cop show, which TNT picked up after NBC canceled it last fall. Season 3 will premiere in January.
“‘Southland’ features provocative story lines and complex characters but TNT’s programming boss Michael Wright says, “These qualities have made ‘Southland’ a favorite among critics and appointment viewing for an extremely loyal audience.”
Earlier this year,TNT aired all 13 episodes of the show back to back. The first seven had already aired on NBC in 2009 and performed only modestly in the ratings, but ratings were up for the Season 2 episodes.
The six-episodes of the second season averaged 2.7 million viewers more than half of whom were in the coveted 18-49 demographic. The channel also notes that “Southland” is its youngest original series, with a median viewer age of 47.
The series stars Ben McKenzie and Michael Cudlitz as LAPD patrol officers. Regina King, Clifton Collins Jr., Kevin Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, Tom Everett Scott, Shawn Hatosy and Michael McGrady also star. Ann Biderman created the series and executive produces with John Wells and Christopher Chulack.
