It’s official, for anyone who still cares, T.R. Knight is out and Katherine Heigl is still in on Grey’s Anatomy. Knight’s character, Dr. George O’Malley, was hit by a bus in the May season finale leaving his life hanging in the balance while Heigl’s Izzie was fighting stage four cancer. As the season ended, it was unclear if either character would survive.
Today, T. R. Knight confirmed that he would not be returning to the show. In a statement, Knight wrote: “Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was not an easy decision for me to make. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to play this character and will miss my fellow cast and crew very much.”
T.R. won’t stay unemployed for long. He will play Leo Frank in the Donmar Warehouse production of Parade, which will open at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles on October 24th. Tony-winner Rob Ashford will direct and choreograph the show, which tells the true story of the arrest, conviction and lynching of Leo Frank in Atlanta after the Civil War. Knight is actually an established stage performer, appearing on Broadway in 2001 in Tartuffe as well as in Noises Offwith Patti LuPone.”I am very fortunate to return to the theater playing Leo Frank in this incredible, acclaimed production of ‘Parade,’” Knight said. “After a five-year break, it feels great to be on stage again.”
Despite Heigl’s rocky relationship with the show, it has been confirmed she will return for season six this fall.
