Vincent D’Onofrio Out on Criminal Intent

vincentVincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson are all leaving Law and Order: Criminal Intent early in the show’s upcoming ninth season. The departures were confirmed by USA a few weeks ago.

D’Onofrio has been on CI since the show’s beginning as the idiosyncratic Detective Robert Goren. His leaving is just part of an overhaul at the show that includes bringing on Saffron Burrows as Nicholson’s replacement.

According to Law & Order creator/executive producer Dick Wolf, D’Onofrio will appear in a two-part opener of season nine that will serve as his official hand-off to Jeff Goldblum. Goldblum joined the cast last season when he replaced Chris Noth, who is now a regular on CBS’ The Good Wife and will appear in next year’s Sex and the City 2.

Though it is unclear why the cast shake up is happening, fans are convinced it is because USA wants to bring new characters that better reflect  the lighter fare of their original programming like Monk, Psych and their newest series, White Collar. Fans have even gone as far as to send cases of marshmallow Fluff to the show’s headquarters, implying that the network only wants to show programming that is “fluff”.

In a statement, D’Onofrio left the door open to returning on the show for guest-starring stints. “For all my loyal ‘CI’ fans, I wouldn’t be surprised if Goren pops up from time to time,” he said.

Thank you for this article. We know that millions of people around the world watch LOCI. We need to get the word out to them regarding what has happened to our favorite show and actors. If people sign the petition and go to our website and blog and take action, maybe USA Network executives will change their minds.(if they have minds!)

It is really sad that USA has decided to make this the fate of L&O:CI. CI was built around Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe’s characters, and to see them let go, as well as Julianne Nicholson and Eric Bogosian, leaving us with only Jeff Goldblum, who has been on the show for one season, doesn’t show a lot of respect for fans of the show. I won’t be watching the new version.

Not a smart move on USA’s part! I will not be watching the episodes without Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe for sure! It was hard enough for us to watch as they killed off Chris North! It is nice to watch a variety of styles and show like “Monk”, “Psych” and “White Collar” have far-fetched plots mixed with humor that would destroy the entire “Criminal Intent” show. We do not wish to be laughing constantly as the bad guys are caught. I have to be in the right mood to watch “Monk” and “Psych” but I draw the line at “White Collar” and am utterly unimpressed by the previews. “Burn Notice” is also in this group of programs I can’t stay interested in for more than 30 seconds.

The best element of “Criminal Intent” is Detective Goren and his endless knowledge in almost everything! Jeff Goldblum can’t hold a candle to Vincent D’Onofrio even with his character’s idiosyncrasies. My mind simply sees Jeff storing his body parts in a jar… “The Fly” is all I can picture…

There are many other women like me out there who are attracted to the geniuses of TV like the characters of Charlie Eppes in “Numbers” and Dr. Spencer Reid in “Criminal Minds”. If USA takes away Bobby Goren “Criminal Minds” will no longer hold our interest!
