“(500) Days of Summer” actress Zooey Deschanel is combining her two love’s’ acting and music, by starring as the title character in a pilot for HBO’s upcoming dramedy “I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie”.
Deschanel, who is well known for her roles in “Summer” and “Yes Man””, also sings in She and Him (along with Matt Ward). The duo describes themselves as musicians who “make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. [And] occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright.”
“Confessions” is based on the 1987 memoir of the same name by former groupie Pamela Des Barres.
In the memoir, Des Barres reminisces about her adventures in the 60s and 70, where she started out as a nanny for Frank Zappa before eventually becoming involved with Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page. Des Barres was actually a member of a group of groupies that labeled themselves “the GTOs,” who also served as the inspiration for the “Band-Aides” in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous”. In a case of life imitating art initiating life, Deschanel was in “Almost Famous” as the young lead’s cool older sister.
She and Him’s Volume 2 is in stores on March 23rd.
